I hated the cold
It was 2013, just three years after I took over Greenlake Martial Arts and just one year after I had received my black belt from founder Sijo John Beall.
I got a minor neck tweak practicing chokes in the advanced class. I shook it off not thinking much of it at the time. A couple of months later I broke my hand practicing a defense against a kick. It was the first real injury I had gotten in years. It was a silly accident, and definitely my fault. I casted it and kept training my good side.
And then less than a year later, competing in a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu match, I got a knee and hip injury from getting leg locked. And that was the straw that broke my body down. I had inflammation and pain constantly. It felt like it was everywhere. I went to several doctors, tried different treatments... nothing worked.
But what I ended up discovering was the power of cold water. Icy, frigid water, submersed in for just a handful of seconds or max a couple of minutes did miracles that nothing else came close to.
Within days I felt better. Within weeks the healing took on power of its own. Now many years later, I still get into cold water, whether nature, my shower or my freezer tub virtually everyday.
When I first realized the power of the cold I dreamed about adding this modality to our martial arts school. But we didn't have permanent space for it at our Green Lake location.
So instead, I held monthly workshops educating many of you about the cold and its vast benefits. It brought us closer together and, as a result, so many of you have told me of your own powerful stories of positive transformation using this simple tool.
When we moved to our new space on Holman Rd, my wheels got turning again, except this time I wanted more than just cold. I wanted the ultimate recovery space so that we can all get the best health, vitality, recovery, connection and continue this martial arts practice for life. It took us 18 months and a ton of work, but it's here. We just opened that part of our facility. We now have a beautiful traditional cedar sauna and cold plunge right inside Greenlake Martial Arts.
It's open to our students at a highly discounted rate and open to our community and neighbors at the best price in Seattle. It's just one more way we can leverage the positive stress to live our best lives.
I would like to invite you for a free visit to plunge and sauna. Just send me a text 206-522-2457. I hope to see you there soon...
All the best in training,
Matt
Self - Defense Tip:
Use the environment to your advantage
Gas station attacks are some of the most common. Do you have a good plan if you get attacked while pumping gas?
This guy did and it was one of the most intelligent moves I have come across in a long time. Check this video out.
It is often that you only have seconds to react in a self-defense situation. Making the right choice at the right time is never easy. But having a good plan and the ability to use your environment wisely can keep you safe.
The protector's Path
Walking around class watching everyone train just a week or so ago, I overheard one of our new students tell another new student, "I just love the energy down here." The two were working hard in a bustling room full of people on the protector's path. These skills we are developing are perishable, meaning if we don't work them, they are often forgotten or withered away to useless. Good thing, the training is damn fun when we get such a great group of people working hard together so that we can keep developing these skills for life!
Stay safe, stay empowered, and together, we can overcome any challenge that comes our way.
