đź”· Stay Safe, Stay Ready: Free Community Self-Defense Class on Dec. 6th

At Greenlake Martial Arts, we focus on real-world survival, not theory. Our system, Tsun Jo, is strategic, tactical, and deeply community-oriented — built to give everyday people practical skills they can rely on when it matters most.

With violent crime rising in Seattle, we’re inviting the community to join us for a free self-defense class on Saturday, December 6th from 10:45 AM – 12:00 PM. This session includes a short demonstration of Tsun Jo’s signature approach: high-pressure sticking and trapping, overwhelming striking, integrated offense-defense, and practical responses to common street threats.

Whether you’re brand new or returning to sharpen your skills, this is a powerful way to learn how to stay safer, more aware, and more confident in everyday life.

🎉 Build Stress Resilience & Speed Your Athletic Recovery (Dec 5–6) End 2025 Stronger Through Leveraging Positive Stress

Self-Defense encounters are stressful — and so is life. Your nervous system is your first line of defense, and training it deliberately is one of the smartest ways to improve both self-defense performance and overall athletic recovery.

This weekend, we’re opening the Cold Club facility for two days of contrast therapy, cold immersion, sauna, and guided breathwork designed to harden your stress response, sharpen your clarity under pressure, and accelerate recovery from training.

Stay Vigilant Seattle: Self-Defense Lessons from Recent News

Hello to all members of our community,

Recent events in Seattle remind us how quickly a normal day can turn dangerous — and why being prepared matters. On December 2, 2025, authorities responded to reports of a man waving a gun near Link light rail tracks and the intersection of South Othello Street and 42nd Avenue South — close to a light-rail station and within walking distance of an elementary school. When officers arrived and the suspect pointed the firearm at them, the situation ended in a fatal officer-involved shooting. KOMO+2FOX 13 Seattle+2

As unsettling as this incident is, it provides several powerful lessons for everyday safety — exactly where the training at our Tsun Jo school becomes relevant.

đź”· What this event teaches us

  • Danger can arise anywhere, even near transit and schools. The incident happened on a busy street near public transport and a school — places many people travel through daily. It underscores that threats aren’t restricted to dark alleys or “sketchy” neighborhoods.
  • Weapon-related encounters are real. The presence of a gun — a lethal threat — instantly made the situation dangerous. In a chaotic moment, survival may depend on skills, mindset, and composure.
  • Situational awareness and de-escalation matter. The responding officers attempted to negotiate before the situation escalated. While law enforcement handles such dangerous moments differently than civilians, the principle applies: awareness, calm-headed thinking, and avoiding impulsive reactions can make a difference when you detect danger.

How Tsun Jo training applies — and why it’s critical

At our school, we don’t just train techniques — we train preparedness. The violent crime trends and rising incidents in Seattle reinforce why our curriculum matters. Here’s how Tsun Jo skills directly address those risks:

  • Weapon recognition & defense fundamentals. Understanding common threats — from firearms to blunt weapons — changes the game. Even knowing how to respond safely (escape, create distance, deflect an attack, or disarm if trained) can save your life or someone else’s.
  • Survivor mindset & situational awareness. Part of self-defense isn’t fighting — it’s seeing. Regularly scanning your environment (especially near transit hubs, night-time settings, or places where many people gather) dramatically improves your odds of avoiding trouble before it finds you.
  • Striking, trapping, grappling under pressure. If avoidance fails and a confrontation occurs, your ability to respond under pressure — through effective striking, trapping, or grappling — might shift the balance in your favor. That’s the core of our Tsun Jo approach: fast, decisive, adaptable.
  • Stress inoculation. Urban danger — like flashing lights, sirens, shouting, abrupt movement — can shock your nervous system. Regular drilling, under pressure, builds resilience so your reactions become more instinctive and less panic-driven.

âś… What you can do today to stay safer

  • Avoid being absorbed in your phone when walking — especially near transit hubs or quiet streets. Look up. Notice what’s going on around you.
  • When you end class, try mentally scanning your route home — identify exits, people around you, any signs of danger.
  • Even if you aren’t training right now — commit to occasional refresher drills: basic strikes, escapes from grabs, awareness drills. Consistency builds readiness.
  • Consider attending our next advanced weapons training this Thursday - Saturday, Dec 4-6: we’ll review gun-disarm drills, low-light scenarios, and escape tactics. Given recent events, now is a very relevant time.

We believe self-defense is not about fear — it’s about empowerment. Incidents like this week’s remind us that danger doesn’t knock first. The more prepared you are — physically, mentally, emotionally — the more choices you retain in a split second.

Stay alert, stay trained, stay safe.

-Matt
