Self - Defense Tip

Last week while I was in Seattle, I held multiple trainings focused on grappling.

For those less familiar with that term, grappling, in a very general sense, refers to grabs, holds and tackles while standing or on the ground. This is something that every self-defense practitioner needs training for to build a strong foundation of protection.

I showed effective and clear defenses as well as counterattacks against predators

  • attacking you while getting into your car or at the ATM.
  • attacking you on the ground, pinning you in vulnerable positions.

I showed close range defense against multiple attackers.

One thing I focused on within each technique was the principle of learning to quickly identify what you can move and exactly what to do in order to gain advantage.

For example, by resisting grabs or holds at the point of control, you are fighting strength to strength -- a losing battle in many situations. But, understanding that there are always parts of your body that you can move in virtually all situations, allows your mind to quickly problem solve and move toward a clear counterattack regardless of the differences in size and strength between you and your opponent.

Tip: if you are held or grabbed in a position where you feel dominated, ask yourself, what can I move, and then use that part of your body to counterattack a vulnerable part of your attacker's body to get free.

The protector's Path

Recently I sat down with one of our students, Caleb (name changed to protect privacy), who works in crisis management for King County. He told me his training in Tsun Jo has been an indispensable part of his ability to stay calm and more centered while managing these difficult situations.

New Programs & Upcoming Specialized Training Opportunities

We are doing a variety of 6-week rotations to improve the training experience:

  • Get started with a membership now to join the Jan. 30 - Feb. 1st specialized training seminars Tsun Jo Director Matt Soule will be holding. The seminars require that you have completed your Basic training. This can be accomplished by starting today!
